Once upon a time, many of us rushed in…and then right back out…of our homes. These days, we seem to be in our homes pretty much 24×7. What worked when we were commuting to offices, sending kids to school and socializing at restaurants does not necessarily work when we are doing everything under one roof.
We experienced this ourselves when our college student came home from spring break…and stayed…and stayed. Fortunately, we had started on a guest suite in our “rightsized” new-to-us home, but things do change when spaces need to be used in new, and often multiple, ways.
Carving out a “work from home” space can be especially challenging, especially in our area’s more contemporary homes that often feature open plans. In our case, we found a small clean-lined desk and moved it into our daughter’s room by moving the dresser and pulled a chair temporarily from the kitchen table.
After some discussion, we found a cool chair online and replaced the dining chair; she added a cork board with a pretty frame and personalized her space a bit. Adding a good task light helps with the video calls and reading. We jazzed up the newly painted bathroom cabinets with interesting pulls and replaced the towel bars and toilet paper holder to add some additional shine and interest and to pull together the overall color scheme.
Finally, some throw pillows, a soft blanket and a unique floor lamp finished the space and make it personal and homey for our college refugee – and it works as a guest room for eventual visitors.
